It first opened its doors to guests on 16 December 1903 and has been a Mumbai landmark ever since. The Taj was the first hotel in India with electricity powering vast chandeliers created by glass blowers in Delhi. It was the first with its own laundry, with an air-conditioned dining room and machines to make ice. It was the first hotel in Mumbai to be equipped with a lift, the first to offer such luxuries as hot water in every room. The hotel imported American fans, German elevators, Turkish baths and English butlers, for the first time in India.
